Questions and answers play a hugh part of getting to know someone. Wow, I just wrote the most obvious statement yet. Anyways, the point of this post is how the response goes. Hopefully the response does not make you uncomfortable. But if it does I have the best line:
Now let's not make this an awkward situation!!
Unfortunately, this can have three different affects.
1.) The mood is lightened.
2.) The mood is silent.
3.) The mood is fake!
Here are three recent situations I have dealt with:
1.) Lightened
At Titan I was working on some filing project like usual, and Ron came into the office humming a tune. I just joked and asked him if he could actually sing pretty good. Well Rita chimed in and asked if he sang good in the shower. Ron stood there dumbfounded, and I said... "now let's not make this an awkward situation!!" Ron and Rita both laughed brushed off the comment.
2.) Silent.
Strawbale boy came into Target and he started to talk to me. Well I mentioned that I had read his article in the Aberdeen News. **REWIND: My gma had heard me talk about this guy and so she was so kind, when reading the newspaper she clipped the article and set it on my computer to see.** That comment was totally normal. But, after I mentioned that I had read it, a picture of the article flashed in my head. So I made the comment that "oh, you know I only saw it because I like to read the newspaper. Yes, I read the paper each day."
Strawbale boy made a face and it was silent. I replied... okay well let's not make this an awkward situation. Trust me it was.
3.) Fake!
Today at I got my oil changed at Valvoline Oil. Before I begin I would like to start for the record that I need to learn to change my own oil because, dang, it is expensive!! Alright, so I was in the waiting room which is the size of a bathroom with a Mexican and Minnesotan, both of whom worked on the new wind farm near Groton. I started the conversation with who they were, what they were doing, you know the common stuff. Than my mouth moved quickier than my mind. "What do you do for fun?"
Mexican... "I went to the Zoo bar on Saturday and saw the country's biggest titties!"
Minnesotan... "How big??"
Me muttering... "let's not make this an awkward situation." They never heard me :(
Mexican... procedes to tell graphic story.
Minnesotan... procedes to ask questions.
Me... procedes to pray for my car to be finished and stare at the floor.
Faking it that nothing is the matter didn't work. They just kept talking about boobs.
So remember when you ask a question, just be prepared to hear something that may be awkward. And if you use my line.. well it has never really been positive for me. So you probably don't want to use it. Now don't make this post an awkward post.
