How to start an interview...

I decided to finally head north for an interview.  I had been corresponding with an agriculture network for the past two months and finally last Wednesday I jumped in my car and headed north.  I spent the night in Fargo, ND, with Alyssa.  Greatly appreciated it!!  And on Thursday I left Fargo at 9:15 a.m. for my 10:30 a.m. interview.

Being from the Midwest I should know better to not cut it so close, especially with road construction.  Yep, I got stuck behind a truck going 45 mph in a 65 mph zone.  Yep, I was going to be late to an interview.  Classy.

I called Mike and told him the situation, and they were very understanding.  Just as I was going to turn into their complex I got stopped at a red light.  As I sat there I saw a license plate with a rainbow.

I was so curious about which state it could be and wouldn't you know it.. HAWAII!

As the light changed I drove into the complex and headed inside.  But I was completely baffled on the reason why a Hawaii car would be in North Dakota.  So once I got inside and introduced myself, I said the dumbest thing.

Me: "I just saw a Hawaii license plate!  Why in the world would it be in North Dakota?"
Mike: "There is an air force base here in town."
Me: "Oh, well I was taking it as a sign from God with the rainbow.  You know he gave Noah that same sign."
Mike: Laughs.

And this is how the tone of my 3.5 hour interview went.  Completely relaxed and comfortable.
Here are a couple of other questions they asked me.

1.) What do you want to do after graduation?
Ideally I would like to get a job.  I mean I want to be happy with the difference I make within the world.

2.) Do you think sales and marketing are two different areas?
Yes… wait no.  I never thought of that! I don't like to think of money while marketing.  Instead I like to think of it as making the unknown known.  But I guess it is bringing in money by spreading the message.

3.) Have you done any broadcasting before?
Oh yes.  I worked for KSDJ for a semester, but that was a horrible experience!  They gave me a quick tour of the studio and told me to have fun.  I didn't know how to talk to myself for an hour.  But from these past two years I have learned to entertain myself.

4.) What are your hobbies?
I run.  Probably too much because I like to do my long runs on Friday nights.  I have done only 1 half-marathon.  I ran it by myself, but my mom supported me and even used a goose call on mile 10!  Also, this next weekend I will be running from Webster to my family's farm.

5.) What were you thinking of asking us on the way up here?
(I really wasn't thinking of anything.)  I guess I was thinking… wow it is pretty up here!

The weirdest part was that they loved me.  We'll see what happens.
I need to practice my interview techniques.
