Children living at the Tijuana Dump. |
"To ourselves, we are great. Yet most of us live life without making a stand, contented to blend into the background of self-rendering nothingness, and when looking back feel contented at our mediocre accomplishments. Nobody remembers the person who conformed out of inadequacy. Nobody notices a patch of grass, they see the tree." - Wayne Burrow
Day three was a little different. I am counting this as my good deed because it helped her be a little happier. I gave a 'cheerleader' talk to Lyss.
She has had a hectic schedule in the past month and has struggled a little bit. Last night at 1:00 a.m. (yes that is in the middle of the night), I had to give her a pep talk. She asked if she could meet me today at 4:00 p.m. Sure thing.
Once I meet with her, I had to fix her computer and passwords. I don't know a lick about technology, but for some reason my family tends to call me for help. I get by. It took nearly 2 hours of encouragement, telling ridiculous stories, and monkeying around with her computer to make her laugh and say those magical words - "Emily, you're so dumb. Thanks." That maybe a put down to some, but seeing Lyss laugh and roll her eyes at me is like Michael Buble lyrics - reassuringly wonderful.
So today I helped a love one. I felt like this has been the best deed. Some may argue I really shouldn't count this as a Random Act of Kindness; but if only they knew how hard it is to sit here and comfort your younger sister. It takes a lot of time and energy to turn the frown upside down and convince her people do care. So please reflect back: remember to acknowledge everyone, challenge yourself to notice even the smallest, shyest, and youngest one. Everyone matters.
Here are a few life-changing photos from my alternative spring break trip to Mexico with the University Lutheran Center.
