Touching stories I think deserve to be retold. Tonight cashiering a large family came through. 5 kids and the parents. The kids were really excited and jumping around. I saw what they were purchasing and asked if it was for Christmas. Turns out the kids had worked for almost a year to raise money for their prize. They recycled cans, raffled off starbuck certificates and did odd jobs for the neighbors. What was this toy? A Wii, numbchucks, and controller. No games... they didnt have the money. But this didn't stop the excitement.
I hope to have the same work ethic instilled in my future family. I never want to be just handed something. I hate that. I want to earn it. When I was in elementary school, my siblings and I raised AKC lab puppies. We sold the litter to hunters, families, and other breeders. The money us kids earned was put into the "puppy money" stash. We used it on our vacations or to eat out or whatever. Later we increased our money making to selling pumpkins and sweetcorn. My older brother and dad would plant it. The rest of us would pick it. And I would sit in the white pickup (with our last name printed on the side) on the Cenex corner and sell our goods to by-passers. I'm quite proud of this because it was a long day and the pumpkins ranged from $.50 - $3.00. Little money for a lot of work!
Now I am working 70 hrs a week because I want to go to grad school. I'm not that financially pressed, but you can never guess what will happen in the future. This is what brings me to my next point. Some people have health problems, and insurance companies sometimes don't cover everything. Enough said.
Please say a prayer for my good friend Laina. She deserves it. Thanks.
